Having been blessed by private music lessons as a child I wanted to be able to offer my own children the same opportunity. Music lessons, however, are a financial investment. With this in mind my husband and I started to put away $20 each paycheck for each child from the moment they were born. Being able to start lessons with a little savings stored up has helped ease our journey into music lessons. With Catherine’s recommendation of waiting till the children are able to read before starting lessons we feel that they are much more able to take on the daily discipline of practicing with focus. This year is my son’s turn to begin lessons. I wanted him to have the opportunity to play something different from his older sister who has been taking piano lessons the last two years, so I turned to the violin. James is a bright and passionate child who is prone to feeling anxious and overwhelmed so I wasn’t too sure how he would respond to violin lessons. Fortunately we’ve found a lovely teacher who can skillfully work with his excited-self without defusing his passion.
